Developing resilient parallel societies

Abstract: A fully decentralised, privacy-preserving, and politically neutral tech stack would provide the necessary support for self-sovereign virtual territories. Recent breakthroughs in distributed systems, leaderless consensus algorithms, and ZK encryption provide the technical foundation that makes such a base layer possible. By using these technologies to build solutions for communications, storage, and smart contracts, we can incentivise the formation of borderless public institutions based on voluntary consent. This opens the possibility for a culture of resilient parallel societies that maximise the costs of surveillance and coercion, while minimising the costs of exit, voice, and loyalty. Doing this requires a resilient grassroots movement to govern and sustain the network, thereby providing trust-minimised, corruption-resistant governing services and social institutions to underserved citizens.

Logos recently stepped into the public eye, embarking on the path toward a network-state future. Our ecosystem is a hive of activity, building, refining, and broadcasting the network state thesis and the tech to actualise it. Adhering to our principles is not an easy route, but it is necessary for ethically building public goods. 

We’re building infrastructure that optimises non-zero-sum interactions, aiming to disempower bad actors without compromising on our principles. For example, censorship may be an effective solution, but it results in capture and other consequences we oppose. In this article, I’ll outline how messages sent on the blockchain can be interpreted and censored, identifying the need for censorship resistance to be built into the very bottom of the technology stack. I’ll also discuss our transformation of the original Whisper protocol into the public good Waku, and how we infuse ethics into the open source protocols we develop.

From Panarchy to Programmable Social Orders 

Thoughts about creating a network state to secure voluntary governance did not appear out of nowhere. The concept had a substantial but obscure philosophical beginning. Selecting a nation state or governance model without leaving home has been discussed since the 1860s, when Paul-Emile de Puydt introduced the term “panarchy” into common usage. This piece explores the idea’s origin, history, and how it slowly transformed into a tech-centric vision in the early 1990s and the 21st century.
